Through the energetic efforts of dealers less exalted than Janis, several of the graffiti artists have been selling briskly for the last year or more in this country, and even more briskly in Europe, where the brash “vitality” of their large, spray-painted canvases tends to fulfill certain fond notions of how American art ought to look. When Janis, the certifier of blue-chip art reputations from Mondrian to Marisol, bestowed his formal blessing on DAZE, CRASH, FUTURA 2000, TOXIC, A-ONE, LADY PINK, Lee Quinones, and several other ex-graffiti writers, it was clear to everyone that graffiti art (as distinct from graffiti writing) was this year’s novelty hit.
The actual moment of passage can be marked on the calendar: December 1, 1983, the opening day of the “Post-Graffiti” exhibition at the Sidney Janis Gallery, on West Fifty-seventh Street. How I feel and what impressions come at a certain moment. Expressive or soft in color and brush action. GRAFFITI / STREETART / INK ON PAPER and CANVAS My work is varied. Amsterdam GRAFFITI AND STREET ART LOVE THE WORK OF RETNA/WARHOL/KAWS/BANKSY/DISNEY/ HARING/PENCK, a new series. Work on paper and work on non-stretched canvas and basic canvas. But also the linear works of Keith Haring and Warhol's drawings are among my favorites. And also a painter such as Günther Förg is a source of ongoing discovery within the abstraction of my work. De Kooning, Kline, Ryman, Serra, and still they are a great inspiration. As a child I visited the Stedelijk musuem in Amsterdam, all the modern masters were there.
